Mill Pond is created
July 31, 1643
The town grants to a group led by George Burden and Henry Symonds the right to build a dam across what was then a marshy area called the North Cove. Permission is given provided the group builds one or more grist mills within three years and “maynteyne the same for ever.” The group subsequently builds a dam along the route of today’s Causeway Street and three mills. But a committee appointed on May 5, 1679 finds the proprietors have failed to maintain the mills, and the town reclaims possession of the property and turns it over to new owners. The mills continue to operate until 1807.
